Geotest completes complex floating cover installation - Geosynthetics Magazine

News | November 5, 2024 | By: ATA

Geotest recently completed the design and construction of a new liner and floating cover for a major irrigation scheme.

The project involved replacing an existing liner that was showing fatigue and areas of failure. Rather than patch the liner, it was decided to proceed with a full replacement because results showed that the liner was close to the end of its useful life. Analysis showed that the liner had major depletion of its stabilizers and antioxidants along with reduction of its physical properties.

A new liner was supplied in 1.5mm HDPE. The cover was a very complex shape with no straight flat surface and a depth of 13 meters, with different slope angles and reverse corners. This proved to be a challenge and required a unique design to accommodate the different operating requirements.

Geotest utilized a specially modified membrane for the application which required good multiaxial properties and dimensional stability to accommodate the loads and stress generated on the operation of the cover.

Panels were prefabricated in a controlled environment reducing the exposure to the elements in the field and then assembled on site. Installation was during the height of winter which created its own set of problems. The tight installation schedule was maintained and the project was delivered for the next irrigation season which was critical for this client.
