FEI releases new tool to determine noseband tightness *video* - Hoefnet nieuws over in- en outdoor menwedstrijde

19 October 2024

The FEI measurement tool needs to be inserted under the noseband and over the nasal bone, then pulled down from the top. The test is quick and easy and takes only a few seconds. If the device passes through easily, the noseband is loose enough. However, if the device does not pass easily, the noseband is considered too tight and the consequences as stated in Art. 1044.8 of the FEI Veterinary Regulations apply. This rule takes effect from 1 January 2025.

If it is determined through the measuring instrument that the noseband is excessively tight, these are the possible consequences:

* Before the competition: The driver horse/pony combination will not be allowed to start unless the noseband is readjusted so that there is sufficient slack.* During the competition: The combination will be excluded from the competition in question and the athlete will receive a Yellow Warning Card. The fact that the combination is excluded means that a pair and Four-in-Hand driver may be disqualified because the noseband of one of his horses or ponies is too tight.

See how to perform the test in the video below:

This method of testing with the new measuring instrument applies to all types of nosebands and to both the upper and lower nosebands. The detailed protocol for measuring noseband tightness will be included in the discipline-specific ‘Noseband Tightness Measurement Protocol(s)’. The measurement tool will be used gradually at FEI competitions in the first quarter of 2025. It will become available for sale to all. More information on this will follow later.
